Many master’s and PhD students in the UAE and across the GCC are told to publish in “ISI indexed journals.” Then the confusion starts: What does ISI mean today? What does “ISI indexed” really mean?
ISI stands for the Institute for Scientific Information. Today its journal lists live inside Clarivate’s Web of Science Core Collection, so people use “ISI,” “Web of Science,” and “Clarivate indexed” for the same idea. The Core Collection has several indexes, and the ones students hear about most are:
SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded)
SSCI (Social Sciences Citation Index)
AHCI (Arts and Humanities Citation Index)

“Indexed in Web of Science” can mean any of these, and they are not the same level. Ask which index a journal is in. Clarivate has also changed how it gives impact factors over the years, so always check the journal’s current profile and do not rely on what an agent or website tells you.

Search the exact journal title or ISSN in the Clarivate Master Journal List. It is free.
Check which index it appears in (SCIE, SSCI, AHCI, or ESCI).
Open the journal’s own website separately. Do not trust a link from an email.
Compare the ISSN on the website with the official record.
Ask your supervisor or university librarian to confirm.
Some journals claim “ISI indexed” when they were removed years ago, or mix up ESCI with the higher-level indexes. A quick check protects you.
