Think about when a storage company asks you for a review. It is at sign up, when the salesman has been charming, the lobby is cold, the coffee machine works and you have not stored a single box yet. So most glowing reviews are rating the first hour of a relationship that is supposed to last a year. They answer the question of whether it was easy to hand over money, and not the question people reading this thread actually care about, which is whether their belongings will still be fine when they come back for them.
The failures that matter show up months later. Mildew on a leather sofa. A stack of boxes that slumped because the cardboard went soft. A leak after heavy rain. A dispute over a deposit. By the time those things happen, the happy reviewer from sign up day has forgotten the password to their review account. I have been that happy reviewer. I left five stars for a place in Al Qusais on the day I moved my boxes in, because the man at the desk gave my daughter a juice carton. The unit was fine, as it happens, but my review was useless to anyone, and I knew it the second I posted it.
Timing beats content
Sort every review page by newest first. Always. A facility can change management, change its air conditioning policy, lose its one good maintenance man, and the old reviews keep the average afloat for a year or more. Your belongings live or die in August, not January. Candles fuse into a single object, and no, do not ask me how I know. Vinyl warps. Photo albums stick to themselves. Wood glue fails quietly and chairs come out wobbly. Leather grows things. If you viewed in the cool months, discount your own impression heavily, and either go back in the heat or ask very specific questions. Is each unit individually cooled, or just the corridor. What is the setpoint. What happens to that setpoint during a power cut or a maintenance day.
Clusters are a pattern

A place will have a slow drip of reviews for months, then fifteen five star ratings in a single week, all short, all first names only, none with photos. That is a review drive. It is not illegal and it is not even dishonest exactly, but it dilutes the signal to nothing.

And read the owner responses while you are at it. A manager who replies to every negative review with a paragraph of legalistic arguing is telling you exactly how your deposit dispute will go. Three stars is where the information lives
Five star reviews are usually about juice cartons. One star reviews are often about rage, and rage makes people vague. The three star reviews are written by people who were annoyed but calm, and calm people list specifics. The lift was out for two weeks. Access hours changed with a day's notice. The air conditioning had a maintenance day and nobody warned us. Water came in during the big rain last spring and the ground floor units on one side got wet.
Specific complaints are gold because you can verify them yourself. Go and look at the lift. Check the corridor floors for tide marks. Look up at the ceiling tiles for brown stains. After the flooding we had last spring, the reviews written that month became the most useful reading in the city, because they told you which districts and which floors coped and which did not. A vague review tells you nothing. A review that says the far corridor on the first floor had standing water for a day tells you exactly where not to put your grandmother's sideboard.
Your own visit beats everything
Doing a proper Dubai storage comparison is work, and most people skip it because the reviews make it feel unnecessary. It is not. On move four I visited three places unannounced, in August, in the afternoon, and I asked to see the actual unit I would rent, not the show unit near the office. One place in Ras Al Khor suddenly could not show me the real unit, and that was the end of that conversation. The place I picked had the worst coffee and the most bored manager, and he answered every awkward question without checking with anyone, which is exactly why he got my money.
Before you sign anything, anywhere, here is what I check now. Corridor floors for water marks. Ceiling tiles for stains. Whether the cameras cover the corridors or just the entrance. Whether units have individual alarms or just a padlock hasp. Who else holds a key or a code. Access hours, and whether they change during Ramadan. Whether the company owns the building or rents space inside somebody else's warehouse, because that decides what happens when the landlord relationship goes wrong. The insurance clause, because insurance included often means their liability policy, not cover for your goods. And the deposit terms, in writing, with a stated number of days for the refund.
On cost, since people always ask: I have been quoted everything from about 150 dirhams a month for a small locker style unit up to 800 or more for something big enough to swallow a two bedroom flat, depending on district, floor and how honest the air conditioning is. Jebel Ali and Dubai Investments Park tended to quote lower than the more central spots when I was looking, but you pay for it in driving time every visit.
One thing I would do differently, and did do on the last move: buy a cheap temperature and humidity logger, the size of a matchbox, and leave it in the unit for the first month. For the price of a takeaway you get the truth about the climate control instead of the brochure version. Mine recorded a daily swing that would have horrified the salesman, in a unit with four point nine stars.

Reviews are a filter, not a ranking. Use them to cross places off, never to crown a winner. A pattern of specific, recent complaints about water, heat or access should kill a facility no matter how pretty the average looks. A high average full of vague praise should earn a place on your visit list and nothing more. And be suspicious of comparison content in general, because a genuinely independent storage comparison is rare in this town. Most of what ranks was written by the storage companies themselves or by sites that earn a fee for sending you to one. Before you take any of it at face value, spend a minute on the people behind the site so you know who is doing the comparing and how they get paid for it.
If you take one thing from all of this, take this: go and stand in the actual unit, on the hottest afternoon you can manage, with the door closed, for five full minutes. If you are comfortable in there, your books and your sofa probably will be too. No review ever written will tell you that, and every review ever written will happily let you pretend you do not need to check.
