Lately I've been wondering about how all too many webmasters can be found busy putting up pages and earning links, without ever taking a moment to check and make sure the website actually performs in search. If it looks good, it looks good…but that doesn't necessarily mean it performs in search.
There are lots of things to look for when check site SEO health. I would begin with Google Search Console to see which pages are indexed, if you're having crawl errors, and what queries people use to find you. It can also provide insights into pages that get impressions but not much traffic.
On-Page SEO The following phases involve the review of on-page SEO: titles and meta descriptions, content Page titles, meta descriptions, structure of headings, internal linking and content relevance are all factors to consider. There is an information when it is not well optimized for the need of the user of the keyword.
Website speed and mobile usability Both are just as much a part of the overall user experience. If a page is slow to load, or if people are unable to use your site on their devices, they won't hang around to see what your site offers.
In addition to this I believe you should check for the pages with broken links, redirect errors, duplicate content and your big money pages that are not on your site. Such fixes will make your website more manageable to maintain and improve search engine navigation.
What have you learned? An SEO audit should not be an endless list of errors. It should tell you what to fix and in what order, and most of all, tell you why. That is, you would prefer to fix a key indexing issue before a slight change to your headings.
If you're a SEO regular what is your go-to process for looking at the overall SEO health of a site? Do you look through technical audits first, check the content or check your Google Search Console? Would be interesting to know what has helped highlight issues straight away.
