Picking a Shopify partner isn't as easy as it seems. A gazillion agencies out there can construct a store, but a gazillion agencies can't construct a store that takes your business to the next level.
As I was researching this a few days ago, I remembered that first thing to check is if an agency understands the business which the website is going to serve. A beautiful Shopify website is essential, but it should also be easy to find, fast on all devices, easy to use for the visitors and adaptable for future updates.
The perfect shopify web development agency partner should not limit itself to a theme installation. Regardless of whether the task involves a custom theme, third-party integration, product configuration, checkout considerations, app integrations, technical SEO, analytics, or even continuous enhancement, it should be taken care of.
The other thing I would look at is their portfolio of previous work. I would go beyond looking at mere screenshots by visiting some of the live stores that an agency has worked on. This will give you a much better perspective of how a website will function.
Communication Perhaps the biggest factor. Ecommerce projects tend to be filled with many minor decisions, and if there is inadequate communication the whole process can suddenly become a nightmare. Before you commit to anything, I would ask what sort of updates you will receive, who will run the project, and how modifications will be handled.
You should also consider what happens after launch. One may have a brilliant shop with unflawed functioning on Day 1 but still have some tuning, performance enhancements, and conversion optimization to be done.
For me the perfect Shopify partner would be someone who see the shop not as a project "another shop to build" but as a asset. Technical is important but so is usability, growth capacity, SEO and future enhancements.
By now, nearly everyone here has probably used a Shopify development partner, so what questions did you consider before you finally went with one? Would you have liked to have asked any questions on Shopify development partner selection, but hadn't?
